Ethiopia 2010 Team Update!

God blessed our time so much in Ethiopia this year. Here’s an update.

Ethiopia 2010 Report

Our trip dates were March 4 – 19th where we traveled to Addis Ababa and to Assosa, Ethiopia. Our team this year was 28 members strong! Each team member carried around 100 pounds of medical, construction, or ministry supplies with them. This year our team had three specific goals and target areas: ministry, health care, and construction.

Medical Team

Throughout our entire time, we were able to see roughly around 5,000 patients with the medical clinics and village clinics the entire two weeks were were there in Ethiopia. The Medical Clinics were met with an amazing response of us working each day with God showing his amazing grace and patience to everyone in and around the clinic. We had an amazing prayer team as well that was able to pray for every patient that would like prayer.

The village visits consisted of a mobile medical clinic in a field or nearby village. We also distributed shoes, clothing, and bears donated from the Mother Bear Project.

Ministry Team

This year it was our honor once again to partner with Touching Africa Ministries under the direction of Dr. Michael and Ann Elliot. They were able to lead teachings and provide discipleship for the various churches in the areas that we were serving. Their goals include:

Touching Africa Ministries conducts an annual Leadership Conference in Addis Ababa, the capital city of Ethiopia. We also conduct an annual Evangelistic Bible Conference in Assosa, which is located in the Benishangul-Gumuz region of Ethiopia. During this week long ministry outreach, we provide leadership training sessions, ministry to women, children and youth. Our medical team operates a free medical clinic, assists the staff at the Assosa hospital and visits remote villages to offer medical care.

Construction Team

The construction team under the direction of our fellow team member, Sam Huckaby, worked with local residents throughout the Assosa hospital that serves more than 1 million people in the region. Local residents were also contracted to paint sections of the hospital as the construction crew completed individual units.

1. 8 each water valves were replaced at the water service lines from the cistern to the wards.

2. Light fixtures were replaced in the surgical ward/ medical ward #1, and maternity ward.

3. Light bulbs were installed in the surgical ward/ medical ward #1, and maternity ward.

4. Starters for lights were installed in the surgical ward/ medical ward #1, and maternity ward.

5. Drains were added to sinks in the surgical ward/ medical ward #1, and maternity ward.

6. An autoclave was installed

7. New faucets were replaced in the surgical ward/ medical ward #1, and maternity ward.

8. Water heaters were repaired in the surgical ward/ medical ward #1, and maternity ward.

9. Light switches were added in the surgical ward/ medical ward #1, and maternity ward.

10. New sockets were installed in the surgical ward/ medical ward #1, and maternity ward.

11. New breakers were installed

Feeding Program

This was begun by our fellow partner and translator in ministry by Solomon. We were able to begin a small chicken farm for this small community that he ministers to. Our future goal is to purchase 10,000 chickens to become full sustainable for this community. With the start of this farm, the 75 children that were working 12 hours a day in a coffee bean factory, were able to quit their jobs and return to school. The cost of a chicken is roughly 15 Burr which is equal to $10.15 USD.

It’s FINALLY here!!

Our team is in full swing for preparations for our March 2010 trip. It’s so exciting for the planning, preparation and support raising! We have a deadline coming up for our team’s airfare at approximately $1700 that is due for EACH team member on January 25th.

I think one of the biggest blessings for this trip and this year is that I am able to continue to cultivate the friendship and relationships that I began last year – with both Ethiopians and past team members. An added plus, is the growth of our team this year – we have nearly doubled!!

We will be leaving March 4-18 and returning to our work that we began so many years ago.

Please join Doctors Giving Back for their continuing work in Ethiopia. Please share in our partnership serving Ethiopians this past 2009 year, and how the need is still great. The following chronicles the work done by the organization Doctors Giving Back during their March 2009 trip to Assosa Ethiopia. The group donated over $100,000 worth of medical supplies, gave free medical care to over 1500, painted portions of the Assosa hospital, and gave clothes, shoes and toys to the children of the region.
